A. INTRODUCTION

Lead story: The Power of Story to Explain Reality

Context: People of every era are helped by explanations. Sometimes the best accounting is not a logical one-two-three presentation but a dramatic visualization. Cultures, both ancient and modern, have explained life by expounding powerful stories. In Revelation 12, the why of the consummation is told theatrically in a great sky-drama that becomes an earth-drama. The great hero is the male child destined to rule, an alias for Christ (not Apollo). The enemy is the horrible red dragon, an alias for a real personal devil. Between the two is the protagonist, the sun-clothed woman, alias for the people of God, both protected and persecuted.

Transition: As we study John's account of the great drama he saw, we might be tempted to stop at the level of visualizing the story. This chapter is as exciting as anything ever put in a space-wars movie. We miss the point entirely if we see this as just an exciting tale. Here is truth, reality, beyond anything ever put in a movie or stage play. Here is the explanation not only for what has been going on throughout history but also for why the consummation of the ages is necessary.
